Where to stay

Luz-Saint-Sauveur, Argeles-Gazost , St. Savin or Lourdes ???

We’re obviously a bit biased, but if you’re here in the Pyrenees for anywhere between a few days and a week, you can’t beat Luz-Saint-Sauveur.  It’s where we live, it’s where we have our shop and it’s where you’ll find the best bike routes, the best restaurants and the best bars! It has the character of a typical high altitude Pyrenees mountain village and apart from the great cycling, there are lot of other outdoor activities such as hiking and white water rafting.

If you’re here for longer or if you’re with a group looking for other activities, you may consider staying down in Argeles-Gazost. It doesn’t have quite the same mountain vibe as Luz-Saint-Sauveur, but it’s centrally located for all the local T de F climbs. The road from Argeles-Gazost to Luz-Saint-Sauveur gets very busy during rthe summer months, but it’s closer to Hautacam, Col du Soulor and the Col d’Aubisque.

St. Savin is a very old, super pretty little village located close to Argeles-Gazost and home to Pyrenees Cycling Lodge who we work with a lot. We get to deliver a lot of bikes there … Even if you’re not staying in St. Savin it’s worth a visit on your way to the Col des Borderes and the Lac d’Estaing.

Lourdes has a lot of big hotels and is popular with big groups, tours and Catholics, but as a cyclist it’s not really a great place to stay. It’s very busy during the summer months and it’s a LONG way to the high mountains! Not so bad in the mornings, but very tiring at the end of the day after a couple of T de F cols.

Luz-Saint-Sauveur – The best place to stay for easy access to the Col du Tourmalet and that’s where you will find Ardiden Velos. The official start of the climb of the Tourmalet, is directly opposite our shop in the heart of Luz St. Sauveur. It’s 19.3 km at an average gradient of 7.8% to the top!  The climb to Luz Ardiden ski station starts on the opposite side of town.
